It’s a tricky assignment: restore an old fisherman’s cottage to become a bright and airy home whilst retaining its original charm.

Much of the home’s beautiful rimu timber was restored and reintroduced into much of the detailing. Original doors were restored and new ones custom made to match. New bedrooms and a living space were built and a sunlit corridor now connects the home the garage.

The main living areas feature a delightful combination of white and wood – simple and natural. Skylights usher in natural light, as do French doors connecting seamlessly to new decking.

Located beside an estuary, this revamped cottage is now a warm, dry modern home for a growing family, still packed with character.
